Dr. Fiorillo-Quinn
provides advanced diagnostic
procedures in the evaluation and
treatment of allergic
conditions, including:
- Asthma
- Allergic rhinitis
- Eczema/Allergic Skin
disorders
- Drug, food, and insect
allergy
- Latex allergy
- Urticaria (hives, welts)
- Anaphylaxis (severe
reactions to foods, drugs,
ant bites, or insect stings)
- Angioedema (swelling of
the body, often the face or
hands)
Your immune system is essential
for fighting infections. Dr.
Fiorillo-Quinn evaluates a
history of frequent, severe, or
unusual infections, including:
- Frequent ear infections
- Sinusitis
- Bronchitis
- Chronic cough
- Pneumonia
- Abscesses/Skin infections
- Recurrent thrush
We strive to provide the most
up-to-date diagnostic tests and
treatment options for our
patients. Newer diagnostic
testing is typically rapid and
is often almost painless. By
identifying the cause of a
patient’s symptoms, we can offer
ways to avoid or decrease
exposure to triggers.
- Allergy skin
testing: A small
amount of the suspected
allergy trigger (allergen)
is placed on the skin, often
on the forearm or upper
back. The skin is gently
pricked to introduce the
allergen under the skin, and
the skin is observed for any
reaction. Results are
usually obtained within 15
minutes. Three (3) days or
72 hours before your testing
appointment is scheduled,
please stop taking the
following medications:
- Antihistamines
- Decongestant /
antihistamine combination
medications
- Astelin, a prescription
nose spray antihistamine
- Any over the counter
allergy medicines, cold
& cough remedies
- Any over the counter
sleep aids, they usually
contain a sedating
antihistamine
(If you are not
certain if you are taking
a product that contains an
antihistamine, ask your
pharmacist or call this
office.)
- ImmunoCAP Testing:
This blood testing is
sensitive for identifying
allergens causing allergic
disorders. The advantage of
this testing is that
medications do not need to
be stopped.
- Allergy Component
Testing: This
is the most advanced and
cutting edge allergy testing
available. This test is not
performed by all allergists.
It is a blood test that is
used in combination with
skin testing that allows for
more specific diagnosis of
food allergies. This test
along with skin testing
allows us to determine if a
food allergy is truly
present and offers more
treatment options.
- Patch Testing:
Your skin condition may be
caused by an allergic
response to chemicals you
come in contact with. The
method to obtain proof of a
possible contact dermatitis
is to apply patch tests.
Sticky patches will be
applied to your back that
contains different common
chemicals found in household
and work environments. A
positive test reaction will
look like a red patch and is
sometimes itchy. Patch
Testing requires 3 office
visits in one week. Test
allergens will be taped to
your back on (1st visit).
The patches will be removed
in 48 hours (2nd visit) and
you will need to return the
next day for the doctor to
do the final reading (3rd
visit). It may be necessary
to have an additional read
at day 7. Patch Testing
Instructions:
- The test will be applied
to the upper back area.
Please notify us if you
are pregnant.
- To prevent excessive
sweating please refrain
from exercising,
performing hard work,
taking a shower or hot
bath. You may take a tepid
bath. Do not get the patch
test area wet.
- Do not take any
cortisone medicine during
the test. Call if you have
any questions about your
medications. You must be
off oral cortisone
(prednisone) for at least
2 weeks prior to this
test.

- Spirometry (Lung
Function Testing): This
test records detailed
measurements of a patient’s
lung function and is used in
assessing asthma and
emphysema/COPD. Often, a
medication such as albuterol
is given to assess for
improvement after the
medication is given.
Special considerations:
- Pediatrics: As a
pediatric allergist, Dr.
Fiorillo-Quinn examines
children in a way that helps
them to relax and cooperate
during the visit.
- Pregnancy: Pregnant
patients with asthma need
close monitoring. They also
need careful medication
selection to minimize any
adverse effects of
medications or risks from
uncontrolled asthma.
- Workers:
Occupational asthma is the
development of asthma
symptoms only in the
workplace in a healthy
worker. A similar condition
occurs when pre-existing
asthma is aggravated by
exposures in the workplace.
- Food Allergy Suffers:
Dr. Fiorillo-Quinn combines
your history along with
cutting edge diagnostic
testing to determine if a
food allergy is present. If
testing is negative, you may
be offered a food challenge
which will determine if the
allergic food may be
consumed in the future. This
is especially important in
school aged children that
are often isolated because
of restrictions in their
diet.
- Drug Allergy: With
the growing number of
resistant organisms it is
important to have the right
antibiotics when treating
infections. Many patients
have a history of penicillin
allergy and may no longer be
allergic. Skin testing is
available to determine if a
penicillin allergy is
present. In addition to
penicillin, other drugs may
be tested to determine if an
allergy is
present.
Allergy Treatment
- Allergy Avoidance:
At the time of your visit we
will identify your allergic
triggers via allergy
testing. The best treatment
is avoidance of your
allergic triggers, however
when this is not possible
medications may be
prescribed.
- Medications: Allergy
medications consist of oral
antihistamines, topical
steroids, nasal sprays and
eye drops. If patients are
unable to take these
medications or their
symptoms are resistant to
treatment, allergy
immunotherapy is the
treatment of choice.
- Immunotherapy
(Allergy Shots): This
treatment involves
administering increasing
doses of allergens to which
a patient is allergic. This
therapy causes the immune
system to become less
sensitive to the allergens
over time. When exposed to
the allergens in the future,
the patient’s allergy
symptoms are often
significantly less. Pollen,
cat, dog, dust mite, mold,
and insect venom allergens
can be used in
immunotherapy.
